A Bayesian Analysis of the Correlations Among Sunspot Cycles

چکیده

Sunspot numbers form a comprehensive, long-duration proxy of solar activity and have been used numerous times to empirically investigate the properties of the solar cycle. A number of correlations have been discovered over the 24 cycles for which observational records are available. Here we carry out a sophisticated statistical analysis of the sunspot record that reaffirms these correlations, and sets up an empirical predictive framework for future cycles. An advantage of our approach is that it allows for rigorous assessment of both the statistical significance of various cycle features and the uncertainty associated with predictions. We summarize the data into three sequential relations that estimate the amplitude, duration, and time of rise to maximum for any cycle, given the values from the previous cycle. We find that there is no indication of a persistence in predictive power beyond one cycle, and we conclude that the dynamo does not retain memory beyond one cycle. Based on sunspot records up to October 2011, we obtain, for Cycle 24, an estimated maximum smoothed monthly sunspot number of 97 ± 15, to occur in January – February 2014 ± six months. Y. Estimation of Genetic Parameters for Production and Reproduction Traits of Holstein Cows of Mazandaran Province using Bayesian Approach

The present study was conducted to estimate the genetic and phenotypic parameters of productive and reproductive traits of Holstein cows in Mazandaran Holstein dairy cattle. To this purpose, data 39792 records of Holstein cows collected at Mahdasht Milk and Meat Company in sari during 1986 to 2015 were used. Productive traits included corrected 305 days milk records, fat and protein produ...

A robust correlation between growth rate and amplitude of solar cycles: consequences for prediction methods

We consider the statistical relationship between the growth rate of activity in the early phase of a solar cycle with its subsequent amplitude on the basis of four datasets of global activity indices (Wolf sunspot number, group sunspot number, sunspot area, and 10.7-cm radio flux). In all cases, a significant correlation is found: stronger cycles tend to rise faster. Owing to the overlapping of...

The Differences in the Relationship between Ionospheric Critical Frequencies and Sunspot Number for Different Sunspot Cycles

Analysis of data for Washington and Watheroo indicates differences in the relationship between føF2 and sunspot number for the current and preceding sunspot cycles. The sunspot number is therefore not entirely satisfactory as an index for ionospheric variations. Consequently, ionospheric data for the current cycle only should be used in preparing ionospheric radio propagation predictions whenev...

Red Shift Phenomena revealed in the Zonal Winds Oscillations Probably Induced by the Sunspot Cycle

By inter-comparing exhaustively the results of wavelet analysis of the sunspot cycles and apparently associated oscillations in the time series of the zonal winds over the tropics, we found convincing evidences of the frequency shift of the oscillations, especially in the lower troposphere. The frequency of the oscillations forced by sunspot cycle decreased considerably in the lower troposphere...

The shape of the sunspot cycle described by sunspot areas

The temporal behavior of the sunspot cycles 12–22, as described by quarterly mean values of sunspot areas, can be represented by a single function containing only two parameters: the starting time and the amplitude of a cycle. The parameters are determined for the more recent 11 sunspot cycles and examined for any predictable behavior. As a sunspot cycle progresses, the amplitude parameter can ...
